The link between sex and mental health [Dec. 11th, 2008|05:51 pm]
Shamans of the Modern Age

[Current Mood |curiouscurious]

There was a new article on MSNBC that showed a study that examined the relationship between lowered stress levels and increased sexual activity and affection.

Here is a link to the article.

I think it is one of those "Well DUH" studies since almost everyone alive knows the stress relieving properties of a great relationship and sex life.

For me, I think the reason for this is that humans are hardwired to be social creatures, so being with someone in a relationship triggers and stimulates that part of the brain that desires to feel accepted and like they belong. Humans are also hardwired to procreate and reproduce, so we have hormones, instincts, and parts of the brain that almost constantly demand that we seek out a mate and reproduce. When those "voices" are silenced and that feeling is fulfilled, it releases chemicals and hormones and reduces stress and quiets them for a while.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Hmm, I've been thinking about it a lot. Pondering about celibacy and religion/spiritual life style. I must say I still feel somewhat conflicted about it all. I often feel that an active sex life takes energy from spiritual growth and I tend to burn my sexual flame quite low these days and use the energy to other things more fulfilling (like spiritual working). However I find closeness and touching very important, healing and inspiring. It is very possible that it's just my own issue I need to solve because all in all I believe there is no limit to Life energy and sex should not take away any.. but that's how I often feel.

I know that too much sex and too many partners is a very bad thing for mental health at least as I really don't know anyone who's having lots of relationships, one night stands & sex centered lifestyle and is still feeling balanced & good. There's so many sides in sex and it's a very fragile area of connection & personality. I have been completely blinded by sexual attraction in my youth and nowadays I feel more or less asexual.. My longings for people are about spiritual connections much more than sexual. And I feel much more healthy & balanced this way.. Maybe I should have became a nun ;)
